3rd Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on AMR

24-25th November, 2022: Marking the conclusion of World Antimicrobial Resistance Week 2022, the Third Global High-level Ministerial Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), hosted by the Sultanate of Oman took place on Nov 24-25 in Muscat, Oman.

The meeting, attended by representatives from over 40 countries, concluded with the endorsement of the Muscat Ministerial Manifesto, which lays out three global targets:

➡️Reduce the total amount of antimicrobials used in the agri-food system at least by 30-50% by 2030 from the current level;
➡️Zero use of medically important antimicrobials for human medicine in animals for non-veterinary medical purposes or in crop production and agri-food systems for non-phytosanitary purposes;
➡️Ensure that ACCESS group antibiotics are at least ≥60% of overall antibiotic consumption in humans by 2030

The Global AMR R&D Hub Secretariat was honoured to take part in the event that also highlighted the crucial need to adequately finance research and development of effective, affordable and equitable access to innovation across sectors, including new antimicrobials (particularly antibiotics), vaccines, diagnostics, waste management tools and safe and effective alternatives to antimicrobials to tackle AMR.

The Muscat meeting paves the way for achieving further concrete political action on AMR as we move forward to the fourth high level meeting on AMR in Saudia Arabia in 2024 and the United Nations General Assembly High Level Meeting on AMR (UNGA HLM) in 2024.
